  Spatial and temporal information is often available in large quantities and thus requires considerable storage space and fast access systems. For this reason, so-called metadata is administered as basis information. Metadata provides basic information, relating for example to the area or the time period, the owner, storage location and size.
With the appropriate use of metadata, the search for specific contents can be made much more efficient. Metadata is therefore particularly well-suited for research systems. Ernst Basler + Partner GmbH has gained a wealth of experience with handling metadata in its work on setting up a geographical database and the development of Internet research systems. Further on, the VGISC portal is an internet portal for requests of worldwide distributed meteorological observation data.
The research systems we have developed make it possible for the user to access the operator's database using any common Web browser. In addition to the use the metadata, importance was also attached to the implementation of thesauri, which allow key word search for various topics.
