Weather forecasts are based to large extent
on measurements collected using weather balloons. Various
European meteorological services carry out so-called
radiosoundings using commercial ships on the Atlantic Ocean and
the Mediterranean Sea. The balloons are prepared and released by
the ship's officers who are in regular contact with the
meteorological service.
On behalf of 26 European meteorological services (EUMETNET), the
German Meteorological Service (DWD) has assumed responsibility
for these radiosoundings at sea. We support the DWD with the
management and the coordination of the work involved. This
includes not only making the logistical arrangements for
supplying the ships with balloons, radiosondes, helium, and so
on, but also conducting negotiations and reaching agreements with
the shipping companies, fleet managers, ship crews, and dockyards
in Europe and in North America.
