The focus in urban development for small and medium-sized towns is increasingly on improving quality of life as a location factor.

Indicators from relevant fields of action can be used to control urban development efficiently, and the progress of towns can be compared so as to identify best practices. The goal of the project "Quality of life in small and medium-sized towns" of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is to develop and test an integrated reporting system for the sustainable development of regional centres in Brandenburg, paying particular attention to subjective public perceptions.

Project research has been carried out by the Institut für Regionalentwicklung und Strukturplanung (IRS) from 2002 to 2005 in cooperation with Ernst Basler + Partner, advis Berlin and the Berlin-Brandenburg urban network Städtekranz Berlin-Brandenburg.

The result of the project is a compact and user-friendly reporting system, based on Internet-based public surveys. This can also provide significant impulses to promote the identification of residents with the development of "their town".

Further information is available here.

For Ernst Basler + Partner this is a further key reference project relating to sustainability.
