Against the background of the expansion of the European Union, questions relating to regional (spatial) development and the organisation of specific projects are becoming increasingly important. This is reflected in the wide range of EU programmes which promote the preparation and implementation of measures with transnational significance, covering a wide range of aspects of regional development.

Ernst Basler + Partner has participated with other institutions in numerous joint projects at the transnational level to promote and support cooperation and partnership, with a continuous exchange of experience. In particular, considerable experience has been gained as a consequence of eastward EU enlargement and subsequent cross-boundary cooperation.

The project "Metropolitan Areas: Regional Systems of European Capitals - Strategies for Sustainable Development", which forms part of the EU initiative INTERREG II C, concentrated on the developments of metropolitan areas in a total of four countries around the Baltic Sea. Approaches were developed for sustainable regional development within the framework of a continuous international exchange of experience, and were then implemented in pilot projects at regional or local levels.
